Eating Pickles Before Bed Gives You Nightmares: Myth or Mom?

I've been sick for over a week now and haven't had much of an appetite, except for pickles (okay, and Cheez-It Party Mix). Pickles are an all-time favorite of mine and when I have them in the house, they don't last long. So while eating my third spear tonight at about 9:00, I had a mini panic attack. I remembered that when I was little, my mom told me that eating too many pickles before bedtime causes nightmares. But this can't be true, can it? Certainly it's one of those things parents make up to keep their kids in line.

In this case, my mom was probably trying to extend the shelf life of her groceries. Scaring me off the pickles with the nightmare line makes sense. But I find myself in bed, 29 years old and a little afraid to fall asleep. So myth or just mom? We'll find out in the morning.

In this entry, I'm assuming pickle is just a phallic metaphor for something else....right?

I JUST GOOGLES PICKLES AND NIGHTMARES AND IT BROUGHT ME TOO THIS BLOG, BUT 2 NIGHTS AGO I ATE A FEW PICKLES BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP AND I WOKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT SICK TO MY STOMACH AFTER DREAMING ABT BEING PREGNANT WITH QUADROUPLETS..NIGHTMARE! I WAS ACTUALLY SICK WHEN I WOKE UP. SO YES I BELIEVE PICKLES BEFORE BED CAN CAUSE NIGHTMARES.

Hahah. I just googled "pickles nightmare" and it brought me here too. My 3 year old daughter just woke up with her 2nd ever night terror, and she had a pickle right before bed. As I was trying to calm her down I remembered my father always forbidding me to eat pickles before bed, because of the nightmare thing. I need to find out the truth behind this! :)

I have conducted my own little experiment at home with family and outside friends to see if eating pickles before you fall asleep does give you nightmares. My study showed that 9 out of 10 had nightmares when they ate pickles before they fell asleep.

my husband had just told me about pickles and nightmares because my 2youngest-one just turned 2, and the other almost 3-had been eating pickles this afternoon, had a late nap and both woke from thier naps terrified! i had never seen the 2 of them so upset- especially at the very same time just after slumber. i dont know if i believe in the pickle theory, but, it does make me wonder...

Too funny! I just found this by Googling "pickels nightmares", too.
The reason I was looking is because 1) my mom always said eating pickles before bedtime causes nightmares (it's true) and 2) the past couple of nights I ate a few garlic-stuffed olives and had some pretty strange dreams!

I too googled "pickles and nightmare" and came up with this topic. I ate a pickle and drank some pickle juice last night before bed and had crazy dreams all night. I enjoy it actually (the dreams) so I'm gonna try it again. =^.^=

I just googled "pickles before bed" because I thought they would make a nice palate cleanser. But a storm is coming, I'm falling asleep... Something will happen. :/

My father used to tell me that eating pickles before bed causes nightmares. So I never ate pickles at night-- until a couple of weeks ago. The first time I had very disturbing dreams. Assuming it was a coincidence, I tried it again the following week. I had a similar, disturbing dream. What my father told me over 50 years ago was true!!! What could be the cause of this?

It's the electrolytes in the acidic pickles that release when you sleep giving your brain extra activity and REM power. I eat pickles for bed just so I can remember an experience my dream. My dreams have never been so vivid......

I was always told pickles will make you dream of naked people. Guess my dad was just a pervert.

How right you are Melanie. The same thing happened to me.

It could be the live ''bugs'' in the pickles. If they're fermented. After long, weird dreams I wake up feeling a little ill when I eat a homemade fermented pickle.

Well I have been testing this theory for about a month straight. At anytime I indulged in 4 or more mini sweet gherkins from vclassic... I had detailed and vivid dreams. Im addicted to having these clear dreams so i am going to keep testing.

I just ate four kosher dill halves and I came across this lol

Wow really. I didn't really believe this myth.. I usually eat a pickle before bed but last night I ate to bowls of cereal and a pickle and I had a very lucid nightmare! Weird..... Or maybe my subconscious read these posts and created a scenario I don't know lol definitally had a vivid nightmare though

I eat pickles to help me go to sleep. It all depends on what type of pickles you eat. I eat the bread and butter sliced ones with no spice. If you eat the dill or spicy type, you can get some real good or bad dream.

I have had dreams numerous times after consuming just one good sized pickle before bed. That is not just a coincidence. But, I see no link between nightmares. Sometimes I have good dreams, sometimes bad dreams.

Is it bad that I just had 9 pickles and I'm about to go to bed

Was looking for same thing. Daughter bought garlic and jalapeño stuffed olives early this week. I've ate some everyday and every night super wild dreams. I never dream as I take a sleeping pills so dreams are rare. I really think there must be something to the pickling in cucumber or olives, vinegar maybe? So I may try to stop eating them and see if changes back. Howe8, they are soooooo good it will be a fight with myself.

I get I'm not so crazy after all. Anytime I told someone about this phenenomenom I was told I was out of my mind. I thought I might look it up to see if anyone else experienced it and guess what...not crazy. haha.

More or less my whole fam had nightmares last night..fing pickles!!

Pickles are legitimately my favorite food. I've demolished many pickles in my time. It doesn't matter what time it is, before bed or not. I've never feared the nightmares that may result from my pickle eating habits. I've eaten countless pickles before going to bed and it has never caused me to have nightmares. In fact, I've tried to induce nightmares by eating pickles before bed. As far as I'm concerned, myth!

eating before sleeping causes dreams...personally I think it has less to do with the pickle so much as eating in general...the fuller your stomach and the closer to sleep your eat the worse the dreams are

I lately have been snacking on pickles now before bed (keto on!) but HAVEN'T noticed any nightmares. I think it's more the anticipation and belief in this old wives tale is what makes these manifestations. Also possibly the fact pickles and certain foods with Vit. B6 can increase dream VIVIDNESS or how some people complain taking melatonin gives them nightmares, a naturally occurring hormones that gives you a deeper sleep. Deeper sleep may bring out the things you stress about in the back of your mind. I believe it's a self manifestation more than a food product.

Never knew about it until after it happened. Can't be placebo!

I just Googled if eating pickles before bed could give you nightmares because I had so many REALLY messed up nightmares last night. I am 44 and it has been years since I could recall any dreams yet I remembered last nights. Once I get to sleep I never experienced issues but last night I was tossing and turning so much. There may be some truth to this.

So I've been playing with this for years and what I've found out is it all depends on my mood and what im thinking about when I'm going to sleep.

i also googled pickles and nightmares and am here now. does anyone have any idea if they actually cause nightmares? i just had like 5 baby dill pickles and i dont want to suffer

Having randomly craved pickles all week, I bought a tub of Grillo’s Hot Dill Pickles yesterday and they were so good that I ate most of them that same night. Woke up at 3am to an extremely vivid nightmare (can’t remember the last time I had one). Had 2 more spears as a midnight snack and proceeded to have another vivid nightmare. Ended up making the connection in the morning and googling it and found this blog post. So funny how many people have either coincidentally ended up drawing the same conclusion or have heard this told as an old wives tale. Don’t think the nightmares will be enough to stop my pickle madness until the craving wears off though. Goddamnit Grillo’s
